I’ve looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It’s life’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know life at all…
Lyrics by Joni Mitchell
(Killarney National Park, Lady’s View, Muckrose, Co Kerry, Ireland / Julie Cook / 2015)
Now that’s a header you don’t see everyday…
About God not being an idiot that is…
Yet somewhere lost along the way,
we, as in you and I, as well as the proverbial them, decided that we knew more than Him…
We knew better,
we were wiser,
we were superior
and we were much much smarter.
We went about things our own way.
We gave Him little to no regard when embarking on something new or different
We didn’t opt to seek His counsel, except when we got into some sort of jam or pickle,
When our backs were up against a wall and we felt small and helpless…
then and only then did we seek His wisdom, His help, His advice, His support.
And just as soon as we emerged unscathed from said predicament,
as we marched forward blazing a new trail,
we pushed Him back over to the side, back in the darkened corner,
ignoring that He was…
there,
wiser,
smarter,
greater…
As I stand staring out, surveying the lay of the land,
I don’t care much for what I see.
We’ve made quite the mess of things it seems, both you and I and the proverbial them.
It seems as if most folks are too consumed, too busy, too absorbed
to actually see how messy things have truly become.
It makes one want to stand upon the highest pinnacle shouting outward for all the world to hear…
“Hey you out there…”
“Yes…you….and me and even them…those way over there…”
“STOP!!!!…”
“STOP IT ALL RIGHT NOW!!!”
“Can’t you see what you’re doing, what you’re not doing, what you’ve done???!!!
“This isn’t what He had in mind…none of this….”
“It’s not what He commanded, what He told us to do…”
“That’s why it’s all such a mess…”
Yet sadly it seems no one really is listening or cares to listen because the illusion of what we think we know has sadly become our reality…
Maybe Joni Mitchell realized a glimpse of this back in 1969….
That is one of my favourite songs Julie. I love the title to this blog, and that photograph is fantastic. Are you being paid a commission by the Irish Tourist Board?
But how right you are. What a mess we have made and continue to make. Just as well that God is not an idiot and that he loves idiots like us.
Just spotted a man in that photograph! How dare he get in the way!
I know, I debated about erasing but I didn’t—adds to the mystery I suppose 🙂
Don’t I wish—that way I could fund a return adventure—:)
Thanks for the kind words–maybe some Irish bigwig will see one and want to usher me back 🙂
sometimes I feel as if that’s what people think about God—that they can live however they please because they think they have him fooled…and we know better than that—the worlds a mess and people need to wake up—hugs my friend

Many thanks Vincent—hope the plumbing is still working like a charm 🙂
You’re most welcome Julie! LoL… oh yeah…a baby ain’t got nothing on me 🙂
🙂
What fun to see this video, Julie. That’s one of the first songs I learned to play on the guitar ~
many years ago!
I absolutely love the song… and the video is so perfect as who better to sing it then Joni Mitchell herself 🙂
On the other hand…compared to God, we are all idiots. Good one Julie, as always
Amen to that Wally 🙂
I stole that quote from IB lol and it has stuck with me since.
well it was a great find 🙂
Ah, 1969, my 6th year of marriage and 2nd year of teaching. Boy did you take me way, way, way back my friend. I’ve decided that as we age it seems to become a conglomerate of several life times. And though I’m still the me I’ve always been, there are some things that have been lost along the way, some good and some not so good. But I have to agree that I don’t really know much more now than I did then. And no, the world is still not listening nor I fear ever will. After all, it certainly didn’t take Adam and Eve long to fall by the wayside either. Just goes to show, that mankind can be given the perfect paradise and still choose to ignore and disobey the Giver of the gift. I loved David’s comment. I do think Irish travel agencies should hire you as their PR person, in residence of course. Love and hugs, N 🙂 ❤
Good, I’ll need a partner and… tag, you’re it 🙂 Pack your bags 🙂
Done! 😘😊❤️
Holy crap! Confirmation, Julie!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
You made me laugh out loud 🙂
And now I’m smiling! So good! 🙂

I hope Julie doesn’t mind me sharing her words. These words pretty much mirror my heart at this moment.
I am greatly humbled Lisa that you’d want to share my thoughts—Thank you, hugs and blessings!!!
Hugs and blessings in return!
Loved this song by Joni. Loved most all her songs. I agree with you and everyone, God never gives up on us even though we continually give up on Him. Well said….Thank you Julie
