come in out of the wind

“It comes the very moment you wake up each morning.
All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals.
And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back;
in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view,
letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in.
And so on, all day.
Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings;
coming in out of the wind.”

C.S. Lewis

(Papa, or Poppie as it depends on who you ask, and Autumn on the last day of
business/ Julie Cook 2018)

50 years is a long time to wait for that final day when you don’t have to unlock shop and carry
on the business of life in retail.

There will soon be, on this mile marker along life’s journey, more to this story
but there is still a good bit of moving, settling and simply exhaling after such a
very long haul.

We’re turning a page…for good or bad…

(anticipating being able to actually fish when they say the fish are biting rahter
than waiting for a stray day off when it’s windy and cold)

(it was such a cake filled day of celebration as well as tearful good-byes…
and thank you Melissa and Mark for all the added sweetness)

One very long and tiring chapter is now complete as we look forward to
the next chapter…
and that chapter’s name is Autumn…

Really pleased for you both that Gregory gets to retire. The cakes look fantastic!

    • Thank you David— I’ll have to email you just how crazy the past two months have been!

      • David says:

We’re just back from Guernsey and work has already gone crazy. I am trying not to envy Gregory!

      • I had a sneaking suspicion you were in Guensey.
Nothing to envy yet David as there is more to settle legally with the business and the assumption of his lease, and everything that’s been moved here that needs to be sorted through as things are really quite crazy.
Hence why I jerked him away for a few days diversion in Nashville—but who knew they’d be experiencing a heatwave—making things hotter there than here…go figure!
Back home to putting out small fires now…it’s like he told a friend who recently reitred from the upper management in Walmart…he didn’t know how lucky he was to simply retire and walk away—shuttering a 50 year business is a headache from dealing with various vendors, companies, leagalites to customers who don’t understand what closing doors forever means….

      • David says:

Well I hope it is all sorted out quickly and with as little stress as possible Julie. We have a heatwave in the UK at the moment but in Guernsey we had the sea breeze to keep temperatures reasonable. We had four days on the beach and even swam in the sea a couple of times. Going to Switzerland Sunday/Monday and Ireland Thursday/Friday. Then we a have a few family visits followed by Michael’s wedding in September.

      • Looks as if this will be a hot summer for one and all— but we are also having plenty of thunderstorms— so the rain has been a plus.
We’ll head down to the beach at the end of the month fir a week— taking Abby and Autumn but it looks as if brenton won’t be able to come due to his whacky work schedule— I had made the reservations months before the job— so we will see.
And I’ll have to email you telling to what I’ve gotten together for Gregory’s retirement gift— you and Marilyn might just have to met us 🙂

Congrats to both of you on this milestone event. You now have a chance to get to know each other all over again and share tons of love with little Autumn. A new chapter, filled with new memories to be made❤️

How wonderful that Gregory is able to make the decision to retire! What a change in both of your lives. Congratulations! Enjoy! God bless!

  4. Wow. I pray Greg is ready for his next adventure into retirement and that the two of you can adjust to the new “24-7” dynamic in your relationship. Kewl cakes!!

    Congrats to you both!

A new day is beginning, for sure. May it bring a restful breeze into your lives. I can picture you two with Autumn between you holding hands being swung gently into new heights. (I hear that that is no longer an approved practice since it might cause injury to her arms. I say bologna but make your own way of swinging in the breeze.)

  8. Wow! What a landmark day for you both!! Congratulations to Greg!! And many wonderful days ahead for you both. ☺️💜💜

    • thanks Lynn—I’ve been a bit remiss in my comment replys as we have been in a whirlwind for really the past two weeks as we departed for Nashville as the dust was still falling just to get him out of town in order to allow some of the ensuing madness to subside–I’ll email more to the story soon.

  9. Sarah says:

Congratulations to Greg at the beginning of a new chapter in your lives. Good fortune and God bless you both. 💕

  10. Tricia says:

Congratulations to Greg and Julie! 🙂
