“Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not;
and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.”
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Happy?
That’s the goal, right?
Isn’t that what we’re always saying to or about people and their decisions and choices…
as long as they’re happy…as long as you’re happy…
Shave your hair off, just for fun…as long as you’re happy.
Color your hair purple…as long as you’re happy.
Marry someone of a different race…as long as you’re happy.
Get that massive tatoo…as long as you’re happy.
Marry someone of the same sex…as long you’re happy.
Runaway from home…as long as you’re happy.
Denounce your faith…as long as your happy.
Decide you want to be a different sex…as long as you’re happy.
Drop out of school…as long as you’re happy.
Go join a protest…as long as you’re happy.
Smash a storefront window…as long as you’re happy.
Take a few drugs…as long as you’re happy.
Leave your spouse…as long as you’re happy.
Sport those latest designer goods…as long as you’re happy.
Live an open sexual life…as long as you’re happy.
Do whatever it is…as long as you’re happy.
Write it all off as an ‘as long as everyone is happy’.
Go forth and be happy…right?
I don’t think it’s that simply…
Faith is not a feeling.
It is not about “as long as you are happy…
Faith is not a matter of what the world claims as happiness.
There is a deeper level of happiness that transcends both space and time…
happiness this world will never understand or truly know…
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
Psalm 6
