“God writes his name on the soul of every man.”
Venerable Fulton Sheen
(Cades Cove / Julie Cook / 2015)
“Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises
to the contemplation of truth;
and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth—in a word,
to know himself—so that, by knowing and loving God,
men and women may also come to the fullness of truth about themselves.”
Pope St. John Paul II

This week I began rereading a book by a philosopher, Gilbert Ryle, who suggests that body and mind are not two separate entities sharing a being (which he sarcastically calls “the ghost in the machine”) but are two different aspects of the same being, or the same being viewed from different angles. In much the same way, I wonder if faith and reason are not two opposing forces or two complementary wings, but two different approaches to the same truth–neither necessarily wrong and neither necessarily right, but different dimensions to the same substance within each of us. Different wings indeed that while different still fly to the same place!!!!!
